Removable Dentures

What are removable dentures?

Removable dentures are oral prosthetics that replace some (or all) of your natural, permanent teeth. They’re made from long-lasting, durable materials like acrylic, plastic, or nylon and allow you to perform routine activities like biting and chewing.

Removable dentures provide the added benefit of good oral health. By replacing missing teeth, you can lower the risk of more serious issues like gum recession, bone loss, and persistent bad breath.

What are the types of removable dentures?

Dr. Robert Davidson, DDS, P.C. offers several types of removable dentures, including:

Partial removable dentures

Partial removable dentures replace only a few of your teeth. They feature a thin wireframe and several artificial teeth. The wireframe connects to metal clasps that Dr. Davidson bonds to your existing teeth. The clasps prevent the dentures from moving and allow you to smile confidently.

Complete removable dentures

Complete removable dentures replace an entire row of teeth. These dentures have a metal base plate, pink plastic gums, and an arch of artificial teeth. You apply an adhesive to the bottom of the base plate and then place them on top of your gums. The adhesive prevents them from moving, making daily activities like chewing easy and hassle-free.

Removable overdentures

If you only want to remove your dentures every once in a while, consider overdentures. These dentures attach to dental implants — metal posts that Dr. Davidson places beneath your gums. Of all the removable denture types, overdentures are the longest-lasting and easiest to care for.

What does getting removable dentures involve?

At the practice of Dr. Robert Davidson, DDS, P.C., getting dentures takes two or three appointments.

First appointment

First, Dr. Davidson conducts an oral exam and asks about your goals for treatment. Then, he takes a series of oral X-rays. If you’re getting partial or complete dentures, Dr. Davidson takes digital impressions of your mouth and sends them to a dental laboratory that manufactures your removable dentures.

If you’re getting overdentures, he administers a local anesthetic and places several titanium posts beneath your gums.

Second appointment

At your second appointment, Dr. Davidson has you try on your new dentures and makes adjustments as necessary. Then, he provides you with care instructions.

If you’re getting overdentures, Dr. Davidson conducts an oral exam to make sure your mouth healed properly and then takes digital impressions. He sends your impressions to a dental laboratory that manufactures a set of overdentures.

Third appointment

At your third appointment, Dr. Davidson attaches your overdentures to the dental implants. Then, he polishes them and provides you with care instructions.
